What is the pH?
PH value is the concentration of free hydrogen ions in a liquid. The pH of pure water is 7. Liquids that have a greater concentration of hydrogen ions than pure water are acidic and have a pH of less than 7. Conversely, liquids with a lower concentration are hydrogen ions basic and have a pH above 7. The pH scale goes from 1 to 14.
The care of pH meters
The pH meter is a precision instrument. Proper use and maintenance are important for a long life of the meter. Here are some tips:
For new devices, the electrode is usually dried out. Place it in the preservative for four hours prior to first use. Also, after each use,
fill the protective cap for the electrode with the preservative. This will keep your electrode functioning for a long time.
The pH meter must be calibrated before the measurement. The buffer solutions are used for this purpose. If the pH meter can only be calibrated to one point, then use the buffer solution that comes closest to your normal measurements.
Make sure that the buffer solution does not become 'dirty' during calibration. Therefore, never immerse the electrode directly into the vial, but pour a small amount of the buffer solution into an extra vial for calibration. Do not pour the used liquid back into the vial!
Do not touch the electrode, never with your fingers. Clean the electrode with a soft cloth only, without scrubbing.
